My research interests:
My
primary research interests lie in multimodal
Human-Computer Interaction
(HCI), particularly about multimodal Virtual Reality applications
in
education. Human-Computer Interaction is an area of Computer Science
that studies the development and application of efficient, safe,
pleasant, and easy-to-use computer interfaces, to be used by people
with a purpose. Multimodal HCI concerns the integration of human
sensory channels to interact with a computer interface. Virtual Reality
is an HCI technology that comprises a computer-generated 3D space that
is multisensorial and produces a sense of presence (the
psycho-physiological effect of immersion, or being there, inside
that
3D space). My research is focused on the technical and cognitive
aspects of designing, developing and using multimodal HCI, including
Virtual Reality, supported by strong learning and cognitive theories,
Software Engineering, and the Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning
(CSCL) paradigm. In addition, I am interested in the integration and
usability of Gaming Technology in the context of HCI.
My research also concerns Auditory Display. This branch of Computer Science studies the design and use of sound parameters and sonification to convey information at the computer interface. I am particularly interested in the design and use of Auditory Display in multimodal human-computer interfaces and Virtual Reality, with the purpose of supporting learning of the sciences, among other applications.
In addition, there is a strong need for knowing how people can augment their cognition and to improve their day-to-day activities using their human senses in computer interfaces, particularly to support critical and repetitive tasks, such as identification of network attacks and other network anomalies. My recent research involves the application of multimodal interfaces to support analysis of Network Intrusion Detection (NID) and about dealing with obscene material in online virtual worlds, including Second Life and MMORPG video games. I carry out the latter research as part of Dr. Miguel Vargas Martin research projects of the Faculty of Business and IT at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada.
